Near Grenfell Road (accident black spot at dogleg bend)

Leicester - Castle Ward

Description

Accident black spot due to parked vehicles at the bend in Grenfell Road (exit Portland Terrace)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I refer to your email below.

1. The “dog leg” bend on Grenfell Road remains dangerous.
Cars are almost always parked on or very near the bend at the Portland Terrace exit.
Many vehicles approaching the bend from both directions cut the corner.
As some drivers tend to speed, there remains a severe risk of a head-on collision.
I know this because I live here.
Your reply makes no mention of the parking problem, the actual speeds of vehicles approaching the bend (see below) and the issue of vehicles cutting the corner because the narrower road space (due to parked vehicles)

The exit of vehicles from Portland Terrace lane adds to the danger.

2. All I am asking for is the following low-cost measures:

- SLOW road markings on the surface or a SLOW road sign at the bend,
- double yellow lines before, after and on the bend. Yellow lines cannot cost a lot of money.

2. Your state “The average speed of vehicles was 19.9mph north of the bend and 20.6mph south of the bend.”
This cannot be so as it does not take into account the speeds of vehicles approaching the bend from London Road and Morland Avenue.

What measures will the council take to ensure the speed limit is respected?

Urgent action is needed before there is a serious accident involving injury or even a fatality.

Yours sincerely

From: transport-strategyenquiries <transport-strategyenquiries@leicester.gov.uk>
Date: Wed, 23 Oct 2024 at 13:21
Subject: Grenfell Rd

Dear Madam,

The speed surveys on Grenfell Road have now been carried out during September over 7 days, 24 hours a day. Surveys were positioned either side of the bend.

The average speed of vehicles was 19.9mph north of the bend and 20.6mph south of the bend. These speeds are suitable for a 20mph speed limit without the need for traffic calming. The speeds recorded, along with site observations and absence of any recorded personal injury incidents on Grenfell Road mean that any additional measures at this location are not a priority compared to other locations in the city. We have limited resources and have to target them wisely. As such no further action is being considered at this time.

Kind regards

Road Safety Team

Overgrown grass is encouraging people to throw litter into the area and is becoming an eyesore. This wasn't the case in previous years when the grass was regularly cut. There are no wild flowers or plants that grow here it's just weeds and grass. I would really appreciate you're cooperation in this matter.-426 Coleman Road, Leicester, LE5 4EF
